The long-delayed redevelopment of Kamathipura, one of South Mumbai’s oldest and most congested areas, has taken a significant step forward with the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB) of MHADA receiving bids from J Kumar Infraprojects and AATK Construction.
The bids will undergo technical and financial evaluation before government approval. Meanwhile, a biometric survey of residents and occupants is underway to identify beneficiaries. Spanning 34 acres with numerous old and dilapidated structures, the project plans to rehabilitate 8,001 residents and allot homes of 500 sq. ft. to landowners and 225 sq. ft. to non-resident occupants.
The redevelopment envisions buildings up to 57 floors, cluster-based renewal under DCPR 2034, and enhanced residential, commercial, and recreational spaces with upgraded infrastructure. This initiative aims to serve as a model for heritage neighborhood regeneration, adding around 4,500 new homes to Mumbai’s housing stock and transforming Kamathipura into a modern urban village.
