The 624 MW Kiru Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir has achieved a key milestone with the completion of 10 lakh cubic mtrs. of dam concreting, out of a total target of 12 lakh.
This significant progress was announced by Chenab Valley Power Projects (CVPPL), a joint venture of NHPC and JKSPDC. Additionally, the Stator Assembly of Unit-1 has begun, accelerating progress on the powerhouse construction. CVPPL’s MD congratulated the team and emphasised timely completion. The CVPPL is spearheading four major hydroelectric projects in the Chenab basin—Pakal Dul (1000 MW), Kiru (624 MW), Kwar (540 MW), and Kirthai-II (930 MW), with a combined capacity of 3,094 MW, aiming to make the region a hub for hydro power.
Meanwhile, the Pakal Dul project set a record in July 2025 with 927 mtrs. of tunnel boring in one month, reaching 8.1 km of the 14.7 km Head Race Tunnel. The project remains on track for commissioning in 2026.
