In a significant step towards resolving Mumbai’s long-pending slum redevelopment crisis, the Maharashtra government has decided to restart 86 stalled Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects by terminating errant developers and appointing fresh ones.
The move is expected to benefit lakhs of slum-dwellers, including around 50,000 families who had shifted to temporary accommodations but stopped receiving rent from the original developers. The issue gained prominence during the state budget session, following a Bombay High Court rebuke in June 2024 over a decade-long delayed SRA project in Wadala.
To address such delays, a review meeting was held on 16 JUne, 2025 by Mumbai suburbs Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar, where officials confirmed that legal notices had been sent to the defaulting developers. Their development rights will be revoked, clearing the way for new appointments to resume work. “This move will empower residents in Mumbai’s suburbs as it would pave the way for the appointment of new developers, to restart pending SRA projects,” the Minister said.
