On 17 November, 2025, the Ministry of Power held a crucial meeting in Pinnapuram, Andhra Pradesh, to discuss the future of pumped storage projects (PSPs).
Chaired by Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal, the meeting focused on the role of PSPs in storing surplus green energy and addressing electricity demand during non-solar hours. The Minister proposed floating solar projects as a solution to evaporation losses in PSP reservoirs. The government shared key policy initiatives, including guidelines for PSP development, exemptions on charges like Green Energy cess, and a 25-year waiver of inter-state transmission charges for eligible projects.
Additionally, the government has extended budgetary support for infrastructure and issued guidelines for tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) for energy storage procurement. The meeting also highlighted the successful commissioning of the 1680 MW Pinnapuram PSP and the 500 MW Tehri PSP, marking a significant achievement in India's energy sector.
