The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has halted the work on construction of a fifth tunnel of Sawra Kuddu hydroelectric project in Himachal Pradesh.
The dam for the hydro power project is being built on the Pabbar river in Shimla district. Of the five tunnels of the dam project, four have already been built. Though work on the fifth tunnel started in 2007, due to stiff opposition from the locals, the project got delayed. As a result, the cost of the project, executed by Pabbar Valley Power Corporation, has nearly doubled from Rs 648 crore to Rs 1181.9 crore.
