NHPC is likely to shelve two power projects - Tamanthi and Shwezaye - in Myanmar, due to a green clearance issue.
The company has proposed to develop an 880 MW hydro-electric project at Tamanthi with an investment of Rs 17,270 crore, and another 800 MW hydro-electric plant at Shwezaye.
NHPC has already prepared the DPR for both the projects. After reviewing the DPR of the two projects, the Myanmar government asked the company to shelve both. As per the DPR, an implementation of the projects can lead to serious social and environmental consequences in the country. Besides, tariffs worked out in the reports were also found to be unviable.
