NTPC's under-construction hydropower project Tapovan Vishnugad of 520 MW on the river Dhauliganga has been damaged due to glacial burst in Uttarakhand on 7 February 2021.
NTPC’s hydropower project which is under construction is a run-of-the-river project with a capacity of four x 130 MW. All the units were slated to be commissioned in 2022-23. The contracting agencies whose labourers were deployed on 7 February 2021 are Rithwik Projects, HCC and OM Metal Infra Projects.
The glacial burst led to the rising of water levels in the river Rishiganga, which also washed away the Rishiganga small hydro project of 13.2 MW.
The massive glacier avalanche led to flash floods in the state. The extent of damage and casualties is being assessed.
