Oil India’s subsidiary, Numaligarh Refinery (NRL), is set to establish a 200 kilo-tonne per annum (KTPA) aviation fuel plant in Odisha as part of its broader net-zero carbon initiative, which targets completion by 2040.
The project is currently under the detailed project report (DPR) stage and is being planned along the coastal areas, where future opportunities for export may arise, although current projections anticipate robust domestic demand. Speaking in Guwahati, NRL Chairman and OIL CMD, Ranjit Rath said, “2040 is the target of net zero; therefore, there are two prolonged strategies — one doing net zero and another adding a value addition proposition".
NRL is also working on producing activated carbon from bamboo dust at its upcoming bio-refinery in Assam, with technical assistance from IIT Guwahati.
Additionally, NRL is expanding its refining capacity from three to nine MMTPA, supported by a 1,635 km crude oil pipeline from Paradip Port to Numaligarh.
