The Kamala hydroelectric project, approved by the Public Investment Board (PIB) on January 8, will be built in Arunachal Pradesh with a total expenditure of Rs 26,069.50 crore.

The project, designed for 1,720 MW capacity, is expected to generate nearly 6,870 million units of green energy annually, aligning with India's Net Zero emissions target by 2070. It will also aid in flood moderation in the Brahmaputra Valley. Set to take eight years for completion, the project includes a 216-mtrs.-high dam and an underground powerhouse. NHPC will hold 74 percent equity, while the Arunachal Pradesh government owns 26 percent. The financing is structured with a 70:30 debt-equity ratio, supported by grants and reimbursements from both the state and central government.

“The project will not only enhance power generation but also deliver significant benefits to the region, including employment and infrastructure growth,” a spokesperson said.
