The Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi is set to transform vacant land under 93 city flyovers into functional community spaces, including vending zones, shaded waiting areas, toilets and sports pockets.
A consultant will soon be appointed to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) over the next nine months, outlining creative, sustainable and location-specific design solutions. The initiative aims to convert these underutilised spaces into vibrant public assets that contribute to Delhi’s urban fabric and improve citizens' quality of life. Officials noted successful precedents at flyovers in Lajpat Nagar and Moti Nagar, where parks have been developed. Stretches like the New RTR flyover (2,650 mtrs.), Rani Jhansi (2,000 mtrs.), and AIIMS (1,640 mtrs.) are among the major sites identified.
The DPRs will include architectural concepts, signage plans and financial models involving revenue from kiosks, parking, and advertising to ensure long-term upkeep. Only firms with experience in largescale urban development projects are eligible to bid on the consultancy contract.
