THDC India (THDCIL) has announced the commencement of the commercial operation declaration (COD) process for the second 250 MW unit of its 1,000 MW variable speed pumped storage plant (PSP) in Tehri, Uttarakhand. This milestone marks a significant leap in India’s renewable energy and hydropower capabilities.
The Tehri PSP is the country's first variable speed pumped storage facility and the largest of its kind undertaken by any CPSE. The first unit of the project commenced operations successfully in June 2025, and the initiation of COD for the second unit highlights THDCIL’s continued commitment to expanding clean, technologically advanced, and grid-responsive energy infrastructure.
The Variable Speed technology used in the plant allows for greater flexibility and efficiency in managing grid stability and integrating renewable sources. The project is poised to play a critical role in India’s clean energy transition by providing peak load support, balancing renewable variability, and enhancing energy security.
