THDC India (THDCIL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam (GUVNL). The agreement ensures the supply of 184.08 MW of renewable energy from the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) located in Uttarakhand—India’s first Variable Speed PSP.
The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Gujarat’s Finance and Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai, along with senior dignitaries. The Tehri PSP is poised to play a critical role in addressing Gujarat’s peak power demand and will facilitate the smooth integration of variable renewable energy into the state grid, thereby enhancing grid stability. CMD of THDCIL, R K Vishnoi stated that the PSP will provide “reliable green power” and offer “crucial grid flexibility,” essential for managing renewable energy intermittency. The initiative aligns with India’s national objective of deploying pumped storage solutions to ensure round-the-clock renewable power, marking a major milestone in the public sector's contribution to sustainable and scalable energy infrastructure.
“By introducing India’s first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant, we are providing Gujarat with a dependable and eco-friendly solution to address its fluctuating peak power demands. The Tehri PSP exemplifies THDCIL’s engineering prowess and commitment to a sustainable energy future,” he stated. THDCIL is dedicated to accelerating the clean energy transition through advanced hydropower technologies, aimed at delivering both reliability and operational flexibility.
