Construction and mining equipment maker Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Company is shifting a large operation based in Jharkhand to Kharagpur in West Bengal.
The company plans to shut down its oldest manufacturing plant at Jamshedpur set up in 1961, and shift the entire business to its new unit in West Bengal. The process of transferring the plant and machinery has been largely completed.
The Jamshedpur unit manufactured 65-120 tonne excavators and the production line is shifting to Kharagpur along with 300 employees who are expected to move to West Bengal. In the Tata Hitachi Kharagpur plant, Rs 550 crore have so far been invested.
The land at Jamshedpur (around 30 acre) will go back to Tata Motors, which had originally leased out the space to Telcon, erstwhile Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Company.
