Tata Power has signed an agreement with Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to develop the 1,125-MW Dorjilung Hydropower Project on the Kurichhu River in Bhutan.
The project will be built through a joint venture, with Tata Power holding a 40 percent stake and DGPC holding 60 percent. The total cost of the project is Rs 13,100 crore, with Tata Power committing Rs 1,572 crore in phased investments. It will be Bhutan's second-largest hydropower project and the largest public-private partnership (PPP) hydro project in the country. Set for completion by September 2031, the Dorjilung project will produce 80 percent of its electricity for export to India.
This project continues Tata Power and DGPC’s long-standing partnership in developing clean energy, following earlier projects like the Dagachhu Hydro Power Project and the ongoing Khorlochhu project. "The Dorjilung project is a significant step towards enhancing our clean energy portfolio and further strengthening energy cooperation between India and Bhutan," said a Tata Power spokesperson.
