Tata Steel, a major global steel producer, is shifting focus towards sustainable production by aiming to manufacture 10–15 million tonne per annum (MTPA) of green steel via recycling by 2040, according to CEO and MD T V Narendran.
The company, which is adopting low-carbon steelmaking technologies across its operations in India and Europe, views recycling as a strategic shift “from linearity to circularity.” In FY25, Tata Steel produced 30.92 million tonne of steel from a global capacity of 35 million tonne, spread across India, the UK, the Netherlands, and Thailand. It plans to expand its Indian steelmaking capacity to 40 MTPA by 2030.
The company is transitioning from blast furnaces to electric arc furnaces (EAF) in Europe. In the UK, blast furnaces at Port Talbot (three MTPA) have been shut down, with EAF construction underway. In the Netherlands, similar discussions are ongoing with the Dutch government. Tata Steel is also developing a 0.75 MTPA recycling plant in Ludhiana, expected to be operational by FY26, complementing an existing unit near Delhi.
