UJVNL is likely to commence work on its Kishau hydroelectric power unit in Uttarakhand by 2015, after receiving the green nod.
The project, with 660 MW capacity, will be developed with an investment of Rs 7,193 crore. It will be set up on the river Tonks, a tributary of Yamuna that flows between Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Besides the 619 MCM of drinking water, the project will generate water to irrigate 97,076 ha land in five basin states including Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
The company received the project in 2011 from the state government. The power project was facing delay as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand were at loggerheads over the water sharing issue.
In October 2013, the state government, after an environment impact assessment, forwarded a report to the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) for the final clearance. As soon as the project gets the green nod, the company will commence the process for land acquisition.
