Vedanta Aluminium has scaled up capacity of its Lanjigarh refinery in Kalahandi district in Odisha, going up from two million tonne per annum (MTPA) to five MTPA, setting a new operational benchmark.
This expansion will increase India's total alumina refining capacity to nearly 13 MTPA, positioning the country as the third-largest alumina producer globally. "Scaling our Lanjigarh operations to five MTPA is both a capacity milestone and a step toward a resilient, world-class aluminium value chain," said Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium. This achievement reflects Vedanta's commitment to responsible resource development, innovation, and long-term value creation for India.
In November, the refinery achieved its highest-ever monthly alumina production of 254 KT, marking an eight pecent increase from the previous month and a 68 percent year-on-year growth. This achievement was driven by enhanced logistics, cost efficiency, and process optimisation, including handling over 700 rakes in a single month, the lowest specific power consumption in 20 months, and a reduction in conversion costs to an 18-month low.
