Jaiprakash Power Ventures, on 30 June
2006, announced the successful commissioning of its 400 MW Vishnu Prayag
hydropower project in Uttaranchal. The project began commercial generation on 17
June 2006.
The run-of-the-river project
comprising four units of 100 MW each will harness the waters of river Alaknanda
flowing through Uttaranchal's Chamoli district. The project, the largest
hydropower unit in the Indian private sector so far, was completed at a cost of
Rs.1,900 crore.
Other hydropower ventures: In 2003,
JPVL commissioned the 300 MW Baspa (II) project in Himachal Pradesh. This was
the first hydropower project by the Jaiprakash Group. JVPL is in the midst of
developing two more projects -- the 1,000 MW Karcham Wangtoo project in Himachal
Pradesh that is scheduled for commissioning by 2011 and the 2,100 MW Lower Siang
project in Arunachal Pradesh targeted for commissioning by 2014.
