Jaiprakash Power Ventures, on 30 June 2006, announced the successful commissioning of its 400 MW Vishnu Prayag hydropower project in Uttaranchal. The project began commercial generation on 17 June 2006.

The run-of-the-river project comprising four units of 100 MW each will harness the waters of river Alaknanda flowing through Uttaranchal's Chamoli district. The project, the largest hydropower unit in the Indian private sector so far, was completed at a cost of Rs.1,900 crore.

Other hydropower ventures: In 2003, JPVL commissioned the 300 MW Baspa (II) project in Himachal Pradesh. This was the first hydropower project by the Jaiprakash Group. JVPL is in the midst of developing two more projects -- the 1,000 MW Karcham Wangtoo project in Himachal Pradesh that is scheduled for commissioning by 2011 and the 2,100 MW Lower Siang project in Arunachal Pradesh targeted for commissioning by 2014.
