India has initiated construction of the Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh, set to be its tallest dam at 278 mtrs.
NHPC has floated a Rs 17,069 crore global bid to build the main structure, with completion targeted by 2032. The Rs 31,875 crore project will generate 2,880 MW of power and 11,223 million units annually, while also moderating floods with a 1,282 million cubic mtrs. capacity. Arunachal Pradesh will gain Rs 700 crore annually in free power.
The Dibang dam is strategically positioned to act as a buffer against sudden releases from China’s Motuo Hydropower Station on the Yarlung Tsangpo, which could present a challenge water security in India. Chief Minister Pema Khandu and NHPC officials recently inspected the site, affirming the state’s commitment to timely completion.
