NTPC has scrapped its plans to develop
a mega coal-based power plant of 1,000 MW at Mauda, near Nagpur, in Maharashtra.
According to information tabled in Parliament, NTPC will not pursue the Mauda
project due to poor economic ranking of the project. NTPC would instead pursue a
similar project at Raigarh in Chhattisgarh, of which a formal announcement has
already been made.
The pithead-based project in
Chhattisgarh is economically better poised due to assured fuel availability, no
burden on rail network and much lower coal transportation cost. The Mauda
project, on the other hand, would have higher coal transportation cost due to
absence of rail network.
NTPC had proposed to set up a mega
power project in Mauda in 2001. The plan did not progress much over the past
five years.
