The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has informed Parliament that 33 port-road connectivity projects have been initiated under the Sagarmala programme to enhance maritime infrastructure and trade efficiency.
Of these, 11 projects, totalling 216.16 km, have been completed at a cost of Rs 4,085.43 crore, improving last-mile connectivity to ports like Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, Alang, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Redi, and V O Chidambaranar. The remaining 22 projects are under implementation, covering 1,266.32 km with an estimated cost of Rs 23,658.03 crore, spanning coastal states including Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Bihar, and Gujarat.
Delays have occurred due to land acquisition hurdles, utility shifting, environmental clearances, contractual disputes, and weather disruptions. No sanctioned project has been dropped. Corrective measures such as scope adjustments to meet technical needs of port authorities and railways, along with addressing local demands, are being undertaken. Sagarmala aims to leverage India’s 7,500 km coastline for port-led development, reduce logistics costs, and boost exports.
