Tiruchi Corporation has appointed a consultant to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for redeveloping the Central Bus Stand, spread over six acres.
Following the commissioning of the Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur, the civic body plans to repurpose part of the bus stand into an "urban infrastructure facility" such as a convention hall or office complex. The bus stand, in operation for over 50 years, earlier handled more than 2,000 buses daily and served thousands of passengers.
The Corporation’s 2023-24 budget allocated Rs one crore to assess project feasibility, aiming to make it a one-stop hub for public access to government offices. The DPR will evaluate infrastructure needs, including a soil test to determine land strengthening requirements.
The plan involves demolishing old structures and constructing a multistorey complex with office spaces and parking. Officials say the number of floors and design will be decided after the study’s completion, ensuring the new facility supports urban growth while optimising land use.
