The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 460 million results-based financing to modernise rural power infrastructure and improve agricultural productivity in Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra Power Distribution Enhancement Program will provide reliable daytime solar electricity to farmers, supporting the state’s Power Sector Vision 2030. The program includes solarizing agricultural feeders, upgrading rural distribution networks, deploying battery energy storage systems (BESS), and creating green work roles, particularly for women. A complementary USD 40 million concessional loan from the Clean Technology Fund will further support the initiative.

By 2028, the program aims to benefit 9,00,000 agricultural consumers, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by three million tonne and contribute to the state's renewable energy goals. Key elements include upgrading substations, installing transformers, and enhancing system operations through digitisation.
