ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has announced a target to make 70 percent of its steel production 'Green Steel' by 2027. The company plans to reach this milestone through a mix of renewable energy use, enhanced scrap processing, and advanced technologies such as digitisation and machine learning to reduce energy and material consumption across its product lines.
Currently, 65 percent of AM/NS India’s steel production already relies on natural gas, contributing to a lower carbon footprint. The company has a present capacity of nine million tonne per annum (MTPA), which is projected to increase to 15 MTPA by the April-June quarter of 2026.
The company’s green production roadmap is closely tied to India's upcoming Green Steel Taxonomy, expected to launch in 2026-27. Under the taxonomy, steel must emit less than 2.2 tonne of CO2 equivalent per tonne of finished steel (tfs) to be classified as ‘Green Steel’. Emission levels will be ranked on a star-rating system: 3-star (2.0–2.2 tfs), 4-star (1.6–2.0 tfs), and 5-star (below 1.6 tfs).
As per Chief Sustainability Officer Arvind Bodhankar, the government is expected to drive this transition by procuring a significant quantity of green steel in FY 2026-27.
The National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology will be responsible for verifying emissions data and assigning ratings, as the industry aligns itself with India's decarbonisation goals and the global push toward sustainable manufacturing.
