Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has begun studying the Rs 76,200 crore Vadhvan greenfield container port project near Palghar, Maharashtra.
The mega project, with equity participation from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), will have a total capacity of 24.5 million TEUs. Phase-1, expected by 2030, aims to handle 6.85 million TEUs, scaling to 23.2 million TEUs in Phase-2. A special purpose vehicle, Vadhvan Port Project, has been formed to implement the project.
Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director & CEO of APSEZ, said: “We already started studying and we are in the project study stage… it’s worth working on this project.” He emphasized the port’s significance for India’s long-term cargo handling goals, noting: “By 2047, India wants to have 10 billion tonne capacity… with a 33% market share target, we should be having more than 3.5 billion metric ton.”
APSEZ is also expanding container capacity at Mundra, Hazira, Gangavaram, Vizhinjam, and Colombo, citing growing containerisation trends in India’s logistics sector.
