Alstom’s Sri City factory in Andhra Pradesh has successfully completed production of its 500th Metro car.
As Alstom’s largest urban rolling stock manufacturing unit in the Asia-Pacific region, this facility is delivering metro trainsets to not only Indian cities but also global ones – Chennai, Kochi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Sydney and Montreal.
The currently operational metro train sets built at this facility have clocked over 27 million km cumulatively.
Alstom’s Sri City facility started operations in September 2012, with manufacturing for Chennai Metro. So far, the site has recorded over two million manufacturing testing hours and has a capacity to build 480 cars per annum.
Most recently the site successfully dispatched the first batch of two trainsets for the Canadian city of Montreal (Réseau Express Métropolitain).
Presently, the site is manufacturing for Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), Montreal Metro – Réseau Express Métropolitain and Sydney Metro (City and Southwest extension).
Alstom’s footprint in India is spread across various states – focused on developing engineering solutions at the Innovation Center in Bengaluru, electric locomotives (eLoco) at the Madhepura unit, rail components in Coimbatore and eLoco Car Body Shell production in Kolkata.
Indian Railways signed a partnership deal with Alstom in 2015. The contract worth EUR 3.5 billion includes manufacturing of 800 double-section 12,000-horsepower electric locomotives for freight service and associated maintenance for a period of 11 years. The project envisions to create more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Alstom is also executing electrification, signalling and telecommunications system for over 343 km along the Eastern phase of the ambitious Dedicated Freight Corridor.
As part of the contract, Alstom is building the sub-stations and providing the control centre. The control centre situated at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh is one of the world’s largest Operations Control Centres for Railways.
