In a major step forward for India’s maritime and defence sector, the Andhra Pradesh government has approved the establishment of the country’s first dedicated autonomous maritime shipyard at Juvvaladinne, located in Bogole mandal of SPSR Nellore district.
Sagar Defence Engineering Private Limited will develop the specialized facility, focusing on autonomous and unmanned maritime platforms, including surface and underwater vessels. The shipyard is expected to create around 750 work roles, with 300 direct and 450 indirect positions, contributing to the region's industrial and skills development. The state government has allocated 29.58 acres of land for the project, which includes both waterfront and harbour land for shipbuilding and systems testing. The facility will enhance India’s maritime capabilities, including surveillance, offshore security, and defence preparedness.
"This shipyard will support India’s growing focus on indigenous defense technologies and maritime self-reliance," said a spokesperson for the project. Construction is set to begin in December 2025, with operations scheduled for November 2026.
