The Department of Fisheries has approved a proposal from the Andaman & Nicobar Administration for the development of a smart and integrated fishing harbour at Mayabunder, with an estimated cost of Rs 199.24 crore.
The project will receive 100 percent Central financial assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Designed under the Blue Port Initiative, the harbour will feature modern technology, IoT-enabled systems, and sustainable fisheries management practices. It aims to provide safe landing and berthing facilities for 430 fishing vessels, with an annual fish landing capacity of 9,900 tonne. The development is expected to enhance fish-handling capacity, improve operational safety, and support energy-efficient systems.
With vast marine resources and a significant share in India's fisheries sector, this harbour is expected to contribute to the government's goal of achieving one lakh crore in seafood exports by 2030–31.
