The Centre is in the process of preparing a Rs 9,280 crore initiative to part-fund the development of Water Metro systems across India, aiming to ease the burden on roads and offer a sustainable public transport alternative.
The scheme, which will be implemented in partnership with state governments and the private sector, is part of the draft National Water Metro Policy 2026 by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Water metro projects will connect city centres with nearby areas, islands, and promote tourism, while integrating with other modes of transportation. These systems will use mechanically propelled vessels designed for systematic movement of passengers, and, where applicable, vehicles. They will operate in inland, coastal, and other water bodies, equipped with modern vessels that meet safety, accessibility, and environmental standards.
Currently, Kochi is the only city with an operational water metro project in India. The initiative will be rolled out over the next 10 years starting in April 2026, with the government contributing Rs 9,280 crore toward the estimated ?18,594 crore capital expenditure.
