Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held key meetings with Union Ministers G Kishen Reddy (Coal and Mines) and Ashwini Vaishnaw (Railways) in New Delhi to advance infrastructure and economic initiatives in Assam.
During discussions with Minister G Kishen Reddy, the CM emphasised the need to extract new minerals, establish seamless coal linkages for upcoming thermal power plants, and expand the operational area of the Margherita coal mines. These efforts aim to enhance Assam’s revenue and support its industrial base. The Minister responded positively, assuring that the Centre would examine the state’s requirements and collaborate to boost the mining sector.
The discussions align with recent reforms under the revised Shakti Policy approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), designed to streamline coal allocation and support India's energy transition. India surpassed one billion tonne in both coal production and dispatch during FY 2024–25.
In a separate meeting with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, CM Sarma pushed for the expansion of railway infrastructure to transform Assam into a logistics hub for the Northeast. The enhanced rail network would facilitate trade, connectivity, and broader economic development in the region.
