Assam has the highest number of National Highway (NH) projects in the Northeast, with an investment of Rs 39,239 crore, according to official data. It also holds the longest road length under construction.
Arunachal Pradesh has two NH projects covering 815 km, with Rs 8,035 crore invested. Other states like Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura have fewer projects with shorter road lengths. The total investment in approved NH projects across the region is Rs 43,322 crore, with Rs 87,363 crore allocated to ongoing construction.
Regarding budget allocation for NH development and maintenance, Assam again leads with Rs 5,329 crore, followed by Arunachal Pradesh at Rs 3,488 crore. Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura have allocations of Rs 1,227 crore, Rs 1,508 crore, and Rs 514 crore, respectively. The completion of these projects is contingent on factors like land acquisition, environmental and forest clearances, utility shifting, and the financial stability of contractors.
All ongoing NH projects in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura are expected to be completed by 2028. Authorities are taking steps to prevent delays, including streamlining land acquisition, conducting regular project reviews, expediting approvals, and improving coordination with state governments and other stakeholders.
