Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO) has received approval from the Chhattisgarh government to start a 1,200 MW captive power plant. The plant comprises four units of 300 MW each at Korba aluminium smelter.
The plant has been set up with an investment of about Rs 5,000 crore. It will help to boost the company’s annual aluminium production capacity to 5.7 lakh tonne. This plant is additional to BALCO’s two existing plants with the capacity of 270 MW and 540 MW each.
At present, the company’s annual aluminium production capacity is 3.5 lakh tonne. Post operation, the plant, along with BALCO's aluminium smelter, is expected to contribute about Rs 250 crore to the state in the form of various taxes.
