BEML has rolled out a prototype of its new driverless Metro trainset designed for Bengaluru’s Phase-2 network, specifically serving the upcoming Pink and Blue (Airport) lines.
The Rs 3,177 crore contract, under which BEML will supply 318 Metro cars, also includes maintenance support for 15 years. The trainset, named 5RS-DM, was unveiled at BEML’s Bengaluru facility and underwent a test run. BMRCL Managing Director J Ravishankar emphasised that the project marks BEML’s commitment to delivering state-of-the-art trainsets to enhance the commuting experience. The train features modern interiors, energy-efficient systems, wide walkways, USB charging ports, and meets international safety standards. It is also compatible with communication-based train control (CBTC) systems, allowing fully autonomous operations (GoA4).
BEML has also secured additional orders from BMRCL, totalling Rs 819 crore for more trainsets, increasing the overall order from 318 to 396 cars. BEML previously supplied trains for Bengaluru Metro's green and purple lines.
