Bengal Gas Company (BGCL) plans to start piped natural gas (PNG) supply in parts of Hooghly by February 2026, following the completion of a 20 km pipeline from Rajarambai near Mogra to Swetpur More on Delhi Road.
The company has set up a CNG mother station at Jhapa, near Mogra, expected to begin operations by October-end, increasing daily CNG supply capacity from 35 to 50 tonne. BGCL, a 74:26 joint venture between Gail and the Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation, holds the sole license for CNG and PNG supply in Greater Kolkata and nearby areas including parts of Hooghly.
PNG will be distributed via a medium density polyethylene (MDPE) pipeline network, with 58 km laid in Chandannagar and 32 km in Bansberia. PNG supply to consumers in Chandannagar, Bansberia, Kodalia, and Debanandapur gram panchayats is expected to begin in Jan-Feb 2026. BGCL aims to serve 74,000 PNG customers in Hooghly out of 12.18 lakh projected consumers across its regions.
