Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has received a letter of intent (LoI) from South Western Railway, for the design, development, supply, installation, trial, and commissioning of Kavach systems.
The contract, valued at Rs 22.87 crore, covers both on-board Kavach equipment for locomotives and trackside installations at stations, level crossings, intermediate block sections (IB), and automatic block signalling (ABS) locations. The Kavach units will be manufactured at BHEL’s facility in Bengaluru, reinforcing the company’s role in advancing railway safety technologies.
The scope of work includes complete system integration and execution of associated works to ensure seamless operation. This contract, awarded by a domestic entity, has an execution timeline of 18 months. Kavach, India’s indigenous automatic train protection system, is designed to enhance operational safety, prevent signal passing at danger (SPAD), and reduce accidents.
