Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has taken a significant step in bolstering India’s rail manufacturing sector by beginning the supply of semi-high-speed underslung traction transformers for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project.
The first batch of transformers was flagged off from BHEL’s Jhansi facility, marking the company’s entry into the semi-high-speed propulsion segment. These units will be transported to Kolkata for the final assembly of the sleeper train coaches. "This marks a key milestone in our efforts to enhance India's rail manufacturing capabilities," said BHEL officials. Alongside the transformers, BHEL’s Bhopal unit has successfully developed traction motors, further contributing to the project.
Additionally, the Jhansi plant has secured an order for rail borne maintenance vehicles (RBMVs), which will improve safety and reduce manual labour. These achievements align with the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, strengthening BHEL’s role in India’s rail modernization.
