The BMC and Central Railway (CR) have announced a deadline of 31 May, 2026, for completing the long-delayed Sion East-West railway overbridge in Mumbai.
The century-old bridge, closed since August 2024, has caused severe disruptions for commuters, and has particularly affected local residents, with schools, hospitals, and colleges in the vicinity. To address public safety concerns, a foot overbridge was opened in October 2024, allowing demolition work to continue without further disruption. A review meeting led by Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar confirmed the timeline for key project milestones, including the completion of underpasses by early 2026, and girder launching in March and April 2026.
"If all activities progress as per this schedule, the entire bridge will be fully completed by May 31, 2026, and it will be opened for traffic from June 1, 2026," Bangar stated.
