The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRCL) has announced an expansive blueprint to build a 1,575 km Metro network across the state by 2047, marking one of India’s largest planned urban transit expansions.
The plan was presented by UPMRCL Managing Director Sushil Kumar at the “Viksit Uttar Pradesh for Viksit Bharat@2047” seminar. It begins with substantial expansion in the three existing metro cities—225 km in Lucknow, 200 km in Kanpur, and 100 km in Agra. The proposal also includes 150 km corridors each for Noida–Greater Noida, Varanasi, and Prayagraj, while Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, and Meerut are slated to receive 50 km networks each. Around 790 km of the overall network is targeted for completion by 2035.
Highlighting financial feasibility, MD Kumar stated the state’s annual share for the initial 525 km phase would be Rs 1,040 crore, adding that UPMRCL’s track record demonstrates “proven efficiency” in timely delivery.
