Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani emphasised the importance of sewage treatment in maintaining urban cleanliness, public health, and long-term water sustainability.
His remarks came during an inspection of the Bhandup sewage treatment plant (STP) and the Bhandup Complex water tunnel project, which aims to transport tertiary-treated sewage for non-potable uses. The project is a key part of BMC’s strategy to address the growing gap between Mumbai’s water demand and supply while promoting climate-resilient water sources. Commissioner Gagrani noted that sewage treatment plants effectively remove harmful substances and pathogens, allowing treated water to be safely reused, reducing pressure on natural water sources, and improving urban sanitation.
The ongoing construction of an underground tunnel using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will connect various sewage plants and help deliver treated water to the Bhandup Complex, contributing to a larger effort to treat nearly 50 percent of Mumbai’s sewage.
