The Local Self-Government Department (LSGD) has reported significant progress on two community-level projects aimed at setting up sewage treatment plants (STPs) within the Kochi Corporation limits.
These projects are crucial to combat the illegal discharge of untreated wastewater into Vembanad Lake in Ernakulam. The five million-litres-per-day (MLD) STP at Elamkulam has made 75 percent progress, while the 1.1 MLD STP at Ambedkar Colony, Division 16, Edakochi South, has reached 71 percent completion. The co-treatment works at Elamkulam faced a temporary setback due to choking, but the Kerala Water Authority has taken corrective measures. Despite the delay, authorities remain optimistic about completing the project without further issues.
The Ambedkar Colony STP was initially expected to be completed by 30 June, 2025, but as of 31 October, 2025, it was 61 percent complete. These STP projects are part of the nine major initiatives to address sewage pollution in Vembanad and Ashtamudi lakes, including four STPs and a faecal sludge treatment plant at Brahmapuram.
