The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has announced a Rs 1,200 crore plan to enhance road connectivity in Ladakh under Project Vijayak, which celebrated its 15th Raising Day on September 21 in Kargil.
The initiative includes widening key roads, building tunnels and bridges, and using advanced technologies like geotextiles, slope stabilisation, digital monitoring, and eco-friendly construction to ensure year-round access to remote, high-altitude forward areas. Since its launch in 2010, Project Vijayak has developed over 1,400 km of roads and 80 major bridges, notably reopening the strategic Zojila Pass just 31 days after winter closure in April 2025, a record in high-altitude terrain.
The Ministry of Defence highlighted that the project supports both national security and local development. Additionally, Project Vijayak prioritises the welfare of Casual Paid Labourers through initiatives like insulated shelters, better sanitation, protective gear, winter clothing, and health camps. These efforts underline BRO’s commitment to operational efficiency in India's challenging frontier zones.
