Balrampur Chini Mills is set to launch India’s first large-scale polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastics plant by October 2026.
The Rs 2,850 crore project, under the brand name Bioyug, will use sugarcane to produce 80,000 tonne of compostable, low-emission plastics annually. Executive Director Avantika Saraogi highlighted that PLA, derived from renewable sources like sugarcane, offers a more sustainable alternative to conventional plastics. While PLA costs are currently higher, economies of scale will eventually make it more competitive.
Balrampur Chini aims for green sources (ethanol, co-generation power, and PLA) to contribute 50 percent of its revenue by FY27–28. This move is part of a broader effort by India’s sugar industry to embrace green alternatives and reduce carbon emissions, with the Bioyug project seen as a pivotal step in the company’s green transition.
