Work on a barrage across the Cauvery at Mayanur in Karur district of Tamil
Nadu is likely to be completed by the state government by February 2011.
Work on the Rs 189 crore project had begun in February 2009. The barrage is
expected to help in improving water management in four irrigation channels and
the ground water table in the surrounding areas. It is expected to store up to
1.04 thousand million cubic feet of water and harness about 5.4 thousand million
cubic feet of surplus flood discharges that will be taken through a canal to
Agniyar, South Vellar, Manimuthar, Vaigai and Gundar.
The people in Kulithalai-Krishnarayapuram-Mayanur region in Karur district
and Thottiyam-Kattuputhur region in Trichy district are likely to be benefited
by the project. The barrage is likely to double up as road connectivity to the
two regions across the river.
