Doddabommasandra and Rachenahalli lakes in Bengaluru’s Yelahanka zone have been chosen for installing floating photovoltaic (FPV) panels, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar informed the Assembly.
Responding to Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad’s query, Shivakumar said, “Doddabommasandra and Rachenahalli lakes in Yelahanka zone have been selected to set up solar panels to generate 1MW power.” He further clarified that panels occupying about 10 per cent of the lakes could together generate nearly 20MW of electricity. The project, cleared by the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority (KTCDA), will be executed by Karnataka Renewable Energy Development (KREDL).
Deputy CM Shivakumar said electricity generated from FPVs can support lake maintenance and power lamp posts around them, while also reducing water evaporation. When asked about budget allocations, he explained the project is at an initial stage, and neither the state government nor BBMP has earmarked funds yet. Government sources indicated that if successful, this model will be expanded to other lakes across Karnataka to boost renewable energy adoption and improve lake conservation.
