Indian Railways has proposed to set up a new Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU) coach factory near Rupaheli station, Bhilwara district of Rajasthan.
On 22 September 2013, Sonia Gandhi, UPA Chairperson and Congress President, laid the foundation stone for the project.
The project has been approved in the rail budget FY14 at an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore. The Ministry of Railways has already signed an MoU with BHEL for setting up this factory. As per the MoU, the entire cost of the unit will be incurred by BHEL. The manufacturing unit will further facilitate the supply of additional MEMU coaches required by Indian Railways.
The ministry has also signed an MoU with the state government for providing 518 acre required land for the project, free of cost.
