Bihar is undergoing a major infrastructure transformation with the construction of nine new mega bridges across the Ganga River. With seven existing bridges already in operation, the addition of these new structures will increase the total count to 19, marking a substantial enhancement in the region’s transportation network.
Patna district stands at the forefront of this development, hosting six of the new bridges and, among the most prominent is the newly completed six-lane bridge between Aunta and Simaria, which runs parallel to the Rajendra Setu in Mokama. This bridge is now ready for operation and is expected to relieve congestion on existing routes. Another key project is a six-lane bridge currently under construction between Dighwara in Saran and Sherpur in Patna, which will integrate with the Patna Ring Road and support regional mobility.
Additionally, a new six-lane bridge parallel to the JP Setu in Patna has received approval, while construction of a four-lane bridge parallel to the iconic Mahatma Gandhi Setu is also underway. Further strengthening Patna’s connectivity, the six-lane state-funded bridge between Kachchi Dargah and Bidpur is nearing completion and is expected to be operational within the year. Work has also resumed on a four-lane bridge between Bakhtiyarpur and Tajpur, further boosting the district's infrastructure.
In Bhagalpur, a four-lane bridge parallel to the Vikramshila Setu is planned to ease traffic in the region. Additional bridges include a four-lane structure between Agwani Ghat and Sultanganj, another connecting Sahebganj and Manihari, and a proposed bridge in Kahalgaon, Bhagalpur. A six-lane bridge between Matihani and Samho in Begusarai is also under development as part of the Raxaul-Haldia Expressway alignment. These bridge projects are expected to revolutionise transportation in Bihar.
