The Board of Approvals on SEZs is
expected to meet before 10 September 2006 to consider more applications. In its
last meeting on 8 August 2006, the board cleared 46 proposals taking the total
number of clearances to 150. It could not consider more applications, since the
ceiling on the number of SEZs that can operate in the country, at 150, was
reached.
This impediment was overcome by a
subsequent change effected by the empowered Group of Ministers on SEZs who
removed this ceiling and permitted BoA to clear as many proposals as it deemed
fit. However, it issued a rider stating that the situation should be reviewed
after six months or when 75 SEZs become operational in the country, whichever is
earlier.
On the next scheduled meeting, the BoA
is expected to consider 200 pending applications.
