In a bid to accelerate the commissioning of Units 3 and 4 at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP), the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has approved the allocation of 50 MW of unallocated power from Unit 1 to assist in start-up and commissioning activities.
This allocation, which took effect on 19 October, 2025, follows a request from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and will remain until further notice. Under the Union Ministry of Power’s guidelines, NPCIL can draw up to 50 MW for start-up purposes. Units 3 and 4, still under construction, are expected to reach full operational capacity by January 2026.
The state government of Tamil Nadu has requested full allocation of power from these new units, although a decision will be made later. Current progress indicates the units are about 78 percent complete, with key infrastructure milestones already achieved.
