India’s largest state-run power producer, NTPC, is exploring at least 30 potential sites across the country for setting up nuclear power projects, signalling a renewed focus on atomic energy as part of its clean energy expansion.
The sites are spread across five to six states, including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Odisha, though the exercise is still in the early stages. Final decisions will depend on regulatory approvals, land availability, and alignment with the Centre’s nuclear energy framework. “Nuclear energy, with its low-carbon profile and ability to deliver stable output, is increasingly being viewed as a complement to renewable energy,” said a source familiar with the matter.
NTPC’s interest in nuclear power comes as part of a broader policy push to scale up non-fossil fuel capacity, ensuring reliable base-load electricity. With a strong focus on solar, wind, and green hydrogen, a move into nuclear power would further bolster NTPC’s position in India’s evolving clean energy market.
