Chennai-based Creative Port
Development (CPDL) and the Orissa government are expected to sign a concession
agreement for the development of the Kirtania port project at Chaumukh village
in Balasore district by June 2007.
The state government has engaged RITES
to prepare the draft concession agreement. The port project to be spread over
1,018 acres of land will be developed under the BOOST (built, own, operate,
share and transfer) basis in three phases, with a total investment of Rs.2,000
crore.
Phase I will include four berths and
will have facilities to handle 14 million tonne of cargo, will be completed by
2010. The third phase will be completed by 2031 with facilities to handle 50
million tonne of cargo and vessel size of 1.80 lakh DWT.
Apart from this, the company will
build a 36 km rail line from Rupsa railway station to the Kirtania port, and a
road connecting the port with the Kolkata-Chennai NH No 5, acquiring about 1300
acres. CPDL had submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to the government on
14 March 2007 and had signed a memorandum of understanding with the state
government on 18 December 2006, for the development of the port.
